Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

 There are different kinds of social group that are represented through the media. Representation means how things are portrayed by a certain group or thing. However the main 7 that are usually represented are;

Gender

Age

Sexuality

Reginonal Identity

Ability/Disability

Class and status

Ethnicity

In our thriller opening (Exodus) the main social group that was presented were Gender and Age. Some films represent social groups in a positive or negative. Within our thriller film we decided to not follow the stereotype. Girls normally are the victims in films particularly in thrillers and horrors but in our film we challenged this by including male victims to. However when it came to the antagonist we embraced the stereotype by casting the antagonist as a male. In addition, Thriller films tend to lean on the social group; Gender. The association of gender is based upon a patriarchal view where the male is dominating portraying women as weak and commonly the victims. On the other hand in our opening we tried a different approach, showing that regardless of the antagonist’s gender, he too also targets males, therefore due to the changing ideas and views on social groups we used this idea of “anyone can be a victim” to relate to the  audience.

Q6. Technologies- Evidence

Here is a collage, I have put together showing some of the equipment we used during the construction of our film opening.  In these images you can see various forms of technology that was essential in order for us to produce a good quality film.

Q4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

Here are links to previous research I conducting, regarding target audience/ film during our planning and research period;

Knowing and setting a target audience is crucial because when you are aware of whom you are targeting, you begin to plan and produce things that would appeal to that particular group.  Therefore it is essential to do research on the audience who wish to target.   Firstly I carried out some research to find out which sub-genre was popular, once I gained a result I looked into which group of audience preferred thriller films and why.  Through conducting this research i have learnt that by researching who your target audience is, it can determine whether your film turns out to be a success.  By following the conventions psychological thrillers and including the appropriate content and incorporating the interests of people in the target audience, it can all combine and make the film a success.

Here is a facebook profile, that portrays our target audience, by using social network,

Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Representation:

A representation is a constructed media text. Representations can take many forms, including: radio segments, newspaper articles, photographs, films, television programs, television news segments.
There are 7 key areas of representation that are mainly used in the industry:
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Sexuality
  • Reginonal Identity
  • Ability/Disability
  • Class and status
  • Ethnicity
In all, I believe that our final product used age as a main factor. We presented teenagers as helpless. This is shown by the mise en scene. We see that all the victims are teenagers. Furthermore, our product challenges the general stereotype of women always being the victim because we also have males who are being murdered.

Q3. Media Institution

Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?

Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?

When making a film it is important to make clear who you are addressing in terms of audience.
I personally think that our use of mise en scene and our plot helps better attract our audience. Our Target audience is 18+  which is who the antagonist is after. (Young adults, teenagers.)

The overall plot is about a man who commits a series of murders. To make this more relevant to our target audience, we made all the victims teenagers. In our opening you can see that the book is full teenage victims. By using teenagers it entises other teenagers to come and see the film. It convinces other teens to watch the film. Also, we reinforced the teenage theme by having only teenage actors in the product. We made sure that the victims looked quite young to help reinforce our initial idea.

Q4. Target Audience

Knowing who your target audience are is essential because when you know who your audience are then you can produce things that would appeal to that particular group. therefore its crucial to do research on the target audience your aiming for. as i result carried out some research to find out which group of audience like thriller films the most, because this would make the film more successful

the image above shows some of the research i carried out to find out what genre the target audience prefer most

the information i found out was that the type of target audience that enjoy and watched thriller films the most was that general age was 18-24 and 50+ who enjoyed thriller films the most as well as that i established that women enjoy thriller films more than

.

  • All these statistics show the research that i found i also made sure there was two different charts to make my findings more reliable.
  • Most psychological thriller are 18+ because of the violence that may occur in the film for which under 18 years old it may be inappropriate to watch, but 18 is a more responsible age
  • however for the target audience of our thriller we decided that as a 15 year your just as responsible therefore would be able to watch it
  • So the Target Audience for EXODUS was 15+

I also found out more information on the FDA yearbook which provides audience data and bout thriller audiences and how successful thriller films so in cinemas.

Q5. Attract/address the audience?

**THE INTERVIEW
Here are two people from the target audience i interviewed just after they watched the film opening. I constructing this interview in order to find out the positive and negative feedback on whaa they though of the thriller opening by asking them a series of questions about what they liked about it and also about the media elements such as editing and sound. From both candidates that were interviewed i seemed to have got positive feedback, both interviewees said that they enjoyed the story line, soundtrack, also the way it was edited, referring to the effects that were used.

By doing this interview was very effective as it allowed me to learn from any mistakes i had made because i also asked questions which would help me improve next time, such as what were the negatives to the film one of the interview suggested if they did it differently they would have put some shots with no effects that by doing this it would make it clearer.

The rough cut feedback was extremely helpful as it allowed us to improve on our mistakes and be able to make it better for the intended audience. it was really helpful because we did have some faults whilst so then after it being pointed out we were able to correct and re-film, for example some the shots that were filmed weren't filmed accurately because there was space left above the head also they were out of focus. This helped us learn from our mistakes. By re doing the shots we realized the new ones were way better as we changed it from the previous shots

The ways i reached my traget audience was through various differen social network sites beacuse this way its easiest to reach our target audeince or a large scale as many people are interactive with the social networking sites. these sites were;

  • Facebook ( a page, where the public were able to be interactive and leave comments)
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • Youtube
  • Vimeo
  • Cinema Screening

Through all these different platforms the target audience were able to get themselves involved by leaving comments and watch our opening.
In the image above it shows the Facebook page i created for the target audience, this was in order to attract the target audience by providing a summary of what the thriller is about and small information such as the sub genre, this allowed the audience to read this but also want to find out what else happens.
as you can see on the page people from the audience who have watched our opening have left positive comments about it, the EXODUS page also received 18 likes this suggests that the thriller opening was successful and appealed to our target audience

Q1- Conventions

In the recording above it just tell us about the main purposes of film openings which this thriller opening has successfully achieved. However there are also other things which are equally important therefore i'm going to expand on that.
In order to create this successful thriller opening , researched had to be done before everything  on what things are looked for in a thriller opening, so to do this i did some independent research on what type o thriller we were making and how other thriller openings may use the same ideas.
the thriller openings that i  found with similar successfully stylized thriller openings were 'Seven' and 'Arlington Road''. i Think those were the two that were the most similar idea we were going for, therefore it would help me the most in finding out information about conventions, such as in finding out whether stylized openings really make the audience interested in the film. By watching these two thriller openings i was immediately  interested in the story, for that reason we also decided to stick with a psychological, stylized thriller opening. in addition we used intertextual elements, by tacking certain aspect such as the idea of a book which was used as a significant prop in our thriller and also the tile sequence.

this image shows the order of title convention. this order was used in most films, however other films challenged the order by placing it in a different order such as in some films the title of the film would come at the end instead of more near the beginning.
we decided we would also follow the order of the title conventions.

These images show how we used intertextuality by tacking certain aspects and adding it my own one

Q2- social groups

many different social group are represented through the media the main 7 which are usually represented are Gender, Age, Social Class, Ethnicity, Sexuality and Disability.
films represent the social groups in different way depending on what message they are trying to convey to the audience, which can be reflected to the stereotypes that are represented.
This Wordle image shows the different social groups also indicating that they can represented in a positive way or a negative way.

Wordle: social
In my thriller the main social group that was presented was Gender. some films represent social groups in a positive or negative. However I think that in my thriller the typical stereotype that is usually portrayed in the media about women and men wasn't represented in this film. In addition, the usual stereotype that is associated with the social group Gender in thriller film is more of a patriarchal view, where the male is dominating therefore portraying women as weak and generally the victims and the males as strong, aggressive and usually the antagonist or the killer. this suggesting that men are more superior to women and have more power over the women.
Nevertheless we tried ti convey different messages in our thriller by showing that even though the killer is a man he also kills a male not just women, due to the fact that in society people views on social groups are changing, people are stereotyped less there we tried incorporate this within the film to ensure that the audience can relate to it.

Q7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Q7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

One of our first ever mistakes in the prelim was the mise -en - scene in the camera frame. We did not pay enough attention to the background and therefore left the Tripod in the top right hand corner in one of our shots. We also needed to watch the camera space above the head of our actors when filming our final product because in the prelim many of our shots had a lot of space above the heads of people in the film. We received feedback, and this mistake was noticed; we then took this constructive criticism and made sure we did not place the Tripod in any of our shots in the  final product.

Another thing we developed during the process of creating our prelim through to our final products was camera skills. In you look at our prelim, you will see some of the shots we took were slightly out of focus. This happened because we didn't use the manually focus on our camera's properly which meant every time we zoomed in for a shot, the camera went out of focus. In our final product we made sure this did not happen again because it could of cost the group marks. Also, in our Prelim some of our clips were quite dark and we noticed this when we received feedback from another group. We acted upon this feedback and made sure that shots in our final product had adequate lighting.

Also, another thing we made sure we paid special attention to was the way in which we applied our titles. This was also much better in our final product than our prelim. In our prelim we did not stick to the title conventions properly, there were many mistakes like the ordering of the actual titles and we didn't really agree on the way in which the titles should appear in the sequence,   whereas in our final product, we spent a long time in the editing suite on the Apple Macs researching and then placing the titles in a conventional order.
Title conventions was a very important factor during the  editing stages because if we did follow it, it meant that all the work we had done on title conventions would become valid.

To conclude we learnt some valuable lessons and made big improvements throughout the transition of making the prelim to our final product.

Q5. Audience

We filmed an interview with the main actor of our Psychological Thriller 'Exodus'. We asked questions on his Hectic promotional schedule and all the PR he has been doing.

We also filmed a suitable member of the audience asking them questions like "what about the film directly appeals to you" and "where did you see the film".

Q3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Q2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Q2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Representation means how things are portrayed by a certain group or thing. Our media film opening had a mixture of different representations, but we also contradicted some as well. For example we wen along with the stereotype that girls are generally the victims in films, but this was easily challenged when I got killed. Also in thriller films the antagonist is generally a males, we did go along with this in our thriller film, because Troian played the antagonist who is male.
Probably the most negative stereotype we have in our thriller opening is that the victims tend to be female, but because we also kill males during the opening it gets cancelled out.

Q5. Audience

Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?

To attract our audience, which was 15 - 18 and above aged personnel  we made sure that our Mise - en - scene, actors and film name were suitable.

When we produced our Thriller opening, we made sure that we payed extra attention to the Mise en Scene. We did this because our film mainly consists of shots of props which we collected or made along the way.
  • (Use camtasia and highlight the post 'Setting up the props for filming')

The target audience of many psychological thrillers are 18+ This is because they include a lot of violence and some psychological issues which can be disturbing for many younger viewers There are usually warnings on the back of the DVD cover which states why it is rated as it is e.g. contains extreme violence or sexual scenes. In our film opening, we made sure that we used actual teenagers to do the acting, seeing as our target audience is exactly that.

In our film opening making process, we also chose to give our Psychological film opening the name 'Exodus'. We believed that this name was a good name and would appeal to audiences because it means; A mass departure of people. We believed that this linked and had connotations to our film because in our film, a lot of people apparently die.

In the film making process  we also had to create a rough cut. This rough cut helped us to create further ideas whilst editing due to the feedback we received. For example, our teacher 'Donna' said that one particular part of our mise - en - scene, a book that we created by hand looked "tacky" and she also said that  she believed "her young daughter could make something like that". We took this comment as constructive criticism and applied it to our film whilst editing. The particular shots that Donna had commented on were changed immediately and we created a type of negative blue effect, with the advice of Donna again, and it actually turned out much better than it previously was. This negative blue effect appeals to the audience because people generally like to see special effects in a film, due to the fact that it makes the film look more 'High budget'.

Our film is an independent film, which could even be called a 'localalised' film. To get our low budget film seen, we used the internet to get hits. This was quite effective, we used viral sites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Also, our film received hits from being uploaded onto sites such as Vimeo. In addition to this, we used word of mouth to make the release of or film more effective.

Q5: How did you attract/address your audience? (Joel Ryan)

Q5: How did you attract and address your audience?

In film openings, their are certain things which will attract an audience especially when you are making a thriller film opening. So when we produce our thriller opening we had to pay special attention to the Mise en Scene, Storyline, Genre, Location and Sound. When making the film we channeled a lot of energy into creating a filming location which had a lot going on in the Mise En Scene, because our idea was quite simple to carry out in terms of filming. Our second biggest thing we were using to attract the audience was sound. We knew that the right soundtrack would enhance our film track drastically.

We managed to reach our audience by adding the elements which attracted them into our film opening. This included things like the film title, and the storyline. Most people prefer a film opening to intrigue them and directors do this by limiting the amount of information the give away in the opening minutes of the film. This is exactly what we did.

Below are some interviews I conducted asking a couple people around college about what interests them about thriller films:

As you can see I showed some people our film opening and decided to interview them:

  • Gina: She said that she liked the way we did not give away too much information in the opening because it attracted her and made her want to watch more. This corresponds with what I said about the directors thoughts
  • Robert: He said that he liked thriller films because of the element of suspense.
To conclude we aimed to attract our target audience by implementing the main things thriller films use for example, suspense, tensions and quick pace filming.

Q3. Film Distribution

Q3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media and why?

The production company we used was 'Assano Productions'  which was a name our group came up with. The distribution company we used was 'Dragonfly pictures', which was also a name my group came up with. The names of our Production and Distribution companies were made up of a collaboration of spontaneous and on the spot thought from the members of group 45. Due to the fact that we made up  these names, they were instantly classified as 'Independent' seeing as we are a small budget group.

The video below shows Production icon. I used Camtasia to highlight a section of the screen and filmed the icon off of the blog.

The video below shows Distribution icon. I also used Camtasia to highlight a section of the screen and filmed the icon off of the blog.

Defining an independent film: An independent film is a professional film production resulting in a feature film that is produced mostly or completely outside of the major film studio system. In addition to being produced and distributed by independent entertainment companies, independent films are also produced and/or distributed by subsidiaries of major film studios. Independent films are sometimes distinguishable by their content and style and the way in which the filmmakers' personal artistic vision is realised. Usually, but not always, independent films are made with considerably lower film budgets than major studio films. Generally, the marketing of independent films is characterised by limited release, but can also have major marketing campaigns and a wide release. Independent films are often screened at local, national, or international film festivals before distribution (theatrical and/or retail release). An independent film production can rival a mainstream film production if it has the necessary funding and distribution.

Q4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

Q4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

Research shows that many thrillers have a certificate of 18+. This is because thrillers contain some images and scenes which may disturb younger viewers.
For Psychological thrillers, a certificate of  ranging from 15+ to 18+ is the norm. Also, reserach shows that for psychological thrillers the main age group is 15+ boys and girls but seeing how our sub genre was Psychological and our film was based around a range of murders we decided to make our film 18+. I personally believe this is an appropriate age for our film because it would of contained some graphic scenes.
Also, seeing how The film 'Seven' played a massive influence in the making of our film and the certificate of 'Seven' is 18+ it makes sense to make our film 18+.

Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

As a group, we have created a Psychological thriller film opening. Our opening supports the conventions of a stylised thriller opening sequence. Our opening was inspired by the movie 'Seven'. In the opening of a thriller, we expect to see the following :
  • The Protagonist/Normal Person
  • Introduction to characters
  • Credits/Titles
  • Shots of scenery/Props
As a group we have looked at the movie opening of 'Seven' to help us with our film. From 'Seven' we took certain aspects like the book turning, the title sequence and shots of the protagonists hand to add suspense. Also, we used the cutting paper scenes.
In a thriller genre film, we expect to see things like high and low angles, to differentiate the difference between the antagonist and protagonist, jump cuts, close ups of the antagonist and protagonist and build ups in tension. Our sub genre was Psychological. Because of this we decided to include things that would make our opening seem more on the psychological side. For example, we included shots of out antagonist tapping his foot to make it seem like he has a mental problem. This tapping is repeated in the opening.
In a film opening, the titles we should expect to see would usually be in this order:
  • (Name of the Distribution Studio)
  • (Name of the Production Company)
  • (Producer's Name) Production or/and (director only) A Film By (Director's Name)
  • Starring - Principal actors.
  • (Film's Title)
  • Featuring- Featured actors.
  • Casting
  • Music or Music Composed By or Original Score By
  • Production Design
  • Editor
  • Director Of Photography
  • Producer - Often, though, the name of the producer will be the next-to-last opening credit, just before the director's name is shown.
  • Story
  • Writer
  • Director
Our opening supports this order.

Q1. and Q2. Video log

I just thought i would make a blog about today's lesson and our tasks with Louisa!

Q2. Representation

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Representation: This is a process whereby the media construct versions of people, places and events in images, words or sounds for transmission through media texts to audiences. Representation is the basis for all media products. Media products constructs versions of the living experiences through representation.

  • Representation provide models of how we see gender, social groups and places - aspects of the world we inhabit.
  • They are ideological in that they are constructed within a framework of values and beliefs.
  • They are mediated by individuals and media organisations and reflect the value systems of their sources.
  • No representations are real; they are only versions of the real.

In my opinion, my chosen Thriller (Psychological Thriller) represents the social group Teenagers. This is my opinion because most of the characters , if not all of them are around Teenager age 16-18. The antagonist himself, played by me, Torian, is the age of a Teenager (17).

To my current Knowledge, the social group my thriller represents (Teenagers) relates to three of the categories that were used in the TV drama unit; Disability, Age and Gender.

The category of Disability relates to our social group in a slightly complex way. In my groups film opening, the antagonist looks like the average teenager, but his activities concur different. He has a book filled with crossed of peoples faces in red paint (suppose to symbolize blood) and as he goes through it, he comes across a piece of hair, supposedly from one of his victim (as his flashback seconds later confirm) and slowly caresses the lock of hair and then licks the fingers in which he was using to stroke the hair. Along with the fact that he has killed over 15 people and have them crossed off in a type of book of memoirs, he seems like he has a taste for human, seeing as he licks his fingers after stroking a lock of hair of one of his victims, leading to the generalization that he has a mental health issue and is somewhat disturbed.

The category of age relates directly to our social group simply. In my groups film opening, most of the characters if not all of them are teenagers and range from the ages of 16 - 18. Teenagers stand out because wider society view them as hoodlums that are nothing but trouble.

The picture on the left shows the general view of wider society of what teenagers are/do (hoodlums).

The video below was filmed using Camtasia to record the process of adding the pictures on stereotypes to flickr, where they can be seen by the general public.

The category of Gender relates to my film openings social group to a certain extent. In my film opening, the gender of the characters are almost evenly spread out, we decided to do this to leave out any bias. Also, the gender of the antagonist is male. The reason i think this makes the thriller more effective/stand out more, is because wider society can relate to the general ideology that males are the stronger (physically), so by having a male killer, the audience can relate more to him killing others, rather than having a female killer who would go against the wider societies ideology.

In my opinion, our representation of each social group is generally complex.

Q1: In whats ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (Joel Ryan)

Q1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

We managed to create a Psychological Thriller opening which followed the main conventions of films openings. By this I mean that all the titles which were placed on the film were in the correct title sequence order. From a previous media lesson, we learnt that their were four different types of films openings: Traditional, Stylized, Descreet and On blank screen. In our thriller opening we used a stylized film opening for our project. Below is a picture of the title sequence opening conventions:

  1. Distribution Icon
  2. Producer Icon
  3. Distribution Title
  4. Producer Title
  5. Actor 1
  6. Actor 2
  7. Film Title
  8. Actor 3
  9. Actor 4
  10. Actor 5
  11. Costume By
  12. Music By
  13. Edited By
  14. Production Designer
  15. Director Of Photography
  16. Executive Producers
  17. Written By
  18. Director
Above is a list of the norm film title conventions, and our group followed them completely even though we created a stylized film opening. If I were to compare our film opening to another film opening, I will say its quite similar to seven. In evaluation of that I am happy to say that because this is what we were intending to do. Below are some print screens of Seven's film openings which also apply to our film opening.

Most of the titles which appeared on Seven were placed on top of moving image but the actual title  was placed on a plain black screen, we did this as well.

(Print Screen  of Our Triller film)

(Our Thriller Film Title)

As you can see the shots taken from our thriller film are quite similar to Seven. Generally in film openings the titles usually appear on screen for 3 to 4 seconds long. This is another convention we fellowed. Every time a new title appears on the screen it matches the sound track used. Through out the majority of the film every time  the music drops a new title will appear on screen.

What do we expect to see in Thriller Film Openings?

When watching thrillers we expect to see certain things, so therefore when me made our thriller film opening we had to follow these conventions as well or otherwise it would not be a film. From research and things we learnt in previous media lesson, I knew the main elements for thriller film openings is to draw in the media attention. This can be done bye using a soundtrack which build tension, a good use of jump cuts, high and low angles and close ups.Fortunately we applied all these things into our thriller film. When delving into thriller film sub genres we created a Psychological thriller so there were also some conventions here which we would need to follow. The majority of thriller films do not give away the antagonists identity although the films normally start with them.

Q1 Conventions

Conventions of Opening

here is a list of the expected opening title sequences order;

  1. Distribution Icon
  2. Producer Icon
  3. Distribution Title
  4. Producer Title
  5. Actor 1
  6. Actor 2
  7. Film Title
  8. Actor 3
  9. Actor 4
  10. Actor 5

  14. Production Designer
  15. Director Of Photography
  16. Executive Producers
  17. Written By
  18. Director

In the opening of a film we expect to see;

       The location set
  • introduce characters; the protagonist, as they could be a general person
  • tension building, this can be done through camera work
  • Camera work; jump cuts, over the shoulder, close up, high+low angle shot
  • Title of the film, from previous research we found that it comes 7th
  • Title sequences/ Distribution Icon & Title.
  •
  I looked real media that i researched to help me understand what Is expected of a Thriller film opening, some of the films listed below support the list above;

In Psycho the location is set in a city, however from the opening the audience Is not informed on where and what city in particular It Is set In.

In The Unknown, we are introduced to two characters within the first two minutes, we as an audience assume these characters to be the protagonists.

The Taking of Pelham  Is just one example, of the title appearing 7th.

Here we can see the distribution Icon at the begging of the title sequences.
From the research I conducted It supports what you expect to see In the opening of a Thriller Film.

Conventions Of Thriller Genre Films

Thriller films tend to be about the battle of good vs. evil. The two main characters are normally the protagonist (the good guy) and the antagonist (the bad guy). At the beginning of the story there is usually peace which is then disturbed by a particular event; at this point the storyline begins and a chain of bad events happen, engaging the audience. The main aim of the protagonist is to restore peace and justice whereas the antagonist seeks to destroy it. At the end of the story, the protagonist normally achieves his aim and peace is again restored. There are four main conventions of a thriller which are: characters, themes, narrative, and iconography.
