AS Media Studies - Research Activity.

AS Media Studies - Research Activity.

1) Genre and audience tastes.

The Others:
Which genre do you think it is; Horror.

Why you think this is; I think this is a horror because the background is very dark, the woman on the cover looks terrified (this emotion is seen where her eyes are widely open and is looking to her far left).

Who do you think the target audience is; People who enjoy 'edge of your seat' suspense.

Fair Game:
Which genre do you think it is; Conspiracy Thriller.

Why you think this is: I think this is a Conspiracy Thriller because of the red circle which has the words ‘Central Intelligence’. The circle is incomplete and missed the word ‘agency’ which means that the circle spells ‘Central Intelligence Agency’ (or CIA). The significance of this is that the CIA train investigators and they are a major organisation around the world and are known for being mixed up in things like conspiracies, the faint circle on the cover could also signify a clock, which could mean a race against time.

Who do you think the target audience is: People who like a movie where they have to figure things/the plot out.

In Time:
Which genre do you think this is; Action adventure.

Why do you think this is; I think this is an action adventure because the woman on the cover is holding a gun which connotes violence and power. Also the way the man and woman are looking at each other suggests they are there for each other, and there is a connection between them from the way he is holding her neck.

Who do you think the target audience is; anyone who likes to be kept on their toes.

Tower Heist:
Which genre do you think this is; Comedy.

Why do you think this is; I think this is a comedy because of the iconic comedic actors Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller. Also because of the little dog on the bottom right, because it looks out of place so i automatically expect it to be funny.

Who do you think the target audience is; People who enjoy comedy’s.

Unfaithful:
Which genre do you think this is; Romantic Drama.

Why do you think this is; I think this is a romantic drama because the man on the top half of the cover looks like he’s deeply thinking about something, it could be something negative seeing as his facial expressions are quite blank and he looks seriouse. Also the woman lying on another man’s chest on the bottom on the cover, this suggests she could be cheating on the man on the top half of the cover. (also I’ve seen it and she does cheat on him).

Who do you think the target audience is; People who like a love story.

In the line of fire:
Which genre do you think this is; Thriller/Action.

Why do you think this is; I think this is an action thriller because the man on the bottom left is holding a gun, and all the men are looking in different directions, which suggests they are expecting something to happen, whereas the woman on the cover is looking directly ahead.

Who do you think the target audience is; People who like thrillers/ males.

2) Thriller genres and sub-genres.
Disaster Thrillers: '2012'.
The film '2012' tells the story of how the world will end, but mainly follows the story of one family and how they try to get to safety. This film falls into the disaster thriller sub-genre because it follows a certain group(the family's) survival in all of the natural disasters they face, and it plays with what the future is going to bring is such disasters were to happen.

Techno Thrillers: I-robot.
I-robot tells the story of how robots lived with humans and helped them, but they turned evil and tried to take over. This film falls into the techno thriller sub-genre because it looks closely at the use of advanced technology trying to take over the world and control humans. It is also based on science fictional ideas taking over the world with new technologies.

3) Thriller sub-genres.
He loves me, he loves me not; Romance thriller.

How do you know this by the characters; I can tell this is a romance thriller by the woman; in the first part of the clip she is surrounded by roses and various flowers, she has a big smile on her face. Roses symbolise love, so this tells me she could be in love. I can also tell by the man’s facial expressions when he receives a flower that a delivery man gives him. He smiles to himself, this tells us that he feels good and is happy.

How you know this from the use of camera, editing, sound and choice of Mise-en-scene; I know that 'He loves me, he loves me not' is a romance thriller because of its use of camera, editing, sound and Mise-en-scene. In the very beginning of the clip, there is a close up shot of pink roses, followed by another close up shot of a red rose. Roses symbolise love, so you can already tell that it is a romance. Half way through the clip there is a non-diegetic sound track played, the track is very upbeat and it is synchronous with what we are watching; the woman riding her bicycle. There is then a close up of the woman looking in a shop window. The use of props here makes it very clear it is a romance thriller as the display is full of love hearts and merchandise with love hearts on. There is also jump cuts between the delivery man and the woman on her bike, this helps the audience keep track of what’s going on and where they are both going.

Deja Vu: Action thriller.
How do you know this by the characters; I can tell this is an action thriller because of the army men; they looks as if they are looking out making sure everything is in order. There is also a lot of sailors, getting out of busses, they seem to be very happy and are jumping around, this suggests they may have come back from sea or are getting ready to go to sea. Also the man that is checking the cars makes me think its an action thriller because of his confused facial expressions when he sees the keys are still in the car.

How you know this from the use of camera, editing, sound and choice of Mise-en-scene; I know that 'Deja Vu' is an action thriller because of it's use of camera, editing, sound and Mise-en-scene. In the beginning of the clip there is a non-diegetic soundtrack; it is slow paced and quiet and it is synchronous with the slow motion action of women waving. There is then a depth of field shot of busses and sailors and army men getting off. The non-diegetic soundtrack then changes to a bit more upbeat sound, however it makes you think something is about to happen. There is then a wide shot of a boat that the army men and sailors and their families are getting onto. There is then various jump cuts showing you different people on the boat, this also makes me think that something is going to happen. There is then a tracking shot of a security man walking through cars, he stops at one and looks in the window, an eye line match shot is then used to show us that he is looking at the keys that had been left in the car, this makes you suspicious and aware that this is odd. There are various jump cuts from the security man, to the front of the boat, to a band and wide shots of the boat. These shots are leaving you in suspense as to what’s going to happen. As the man is walking to the back of the car there is very fast paced jump cuts to the passengers on the boat, this tells us that we are getting closer to finding out what’s going to happen, there is also a non-synchronous non-diegetic sound track. There is then a close up of a bomb in the back of the car and then a jump cut to the boat exploding and close ups of people falling into the water.
