Film Opening Research

Film Opening Research
What makes an opening sequence? When it comes to film openings, directors and producers do certain things to make the film attractive for the audience. The film opening is a very important part of a film because it sets the genre and draws the audience's attention. However depending on the genre of the film, the opening of it could vary. For example by using pace, fonts, colours, music and other factors one film opening let's say a horror film, will be completely different to a Romantic Comedy.
As I have been set a task to develop a thriller film opening within a group, we need to find out certain things to produce an accurate thriller film opening. This means we needed to look thriller films which had already been made so we have a good Idea how to produce one.
What makes a Thriller movie?
The thriller film genre uses suspense, excitement and tension as the main film elements. This means that this will create suspense, shock, anxiety, anticipation and terror amongst the audiences watching it. Therefore to re-create this effect. We will need to have a fast paced editing speed which will help keep the audience on the edge of their seats. But from further research it's not only the editing speed which will set the genre of the film. Are choice of graphics and sounds are also very important. Generally quite dark sinister music will be used in the beginning of thriller films because this type of music seems to build up suspense amongst the audience due to its ever changing tempo. One minute it could be very fast paced and the all of a sudden it will change to a much slower paced beat. For example one of the most famous thriller films till this day: Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho uses this type of music. A sample of his theme tune for his film is below:
Joel Ryan
