Foley Sound - Thinking and Research

Foley Sound

Foley sound is when everyday sounds are recreated to improve the quality of modern day films. These sounds can range from the footsteps of your average person, all the way to the sounds on a car engine revving. When making our thriller opening scene in the near future, Foley sound is going to be an extremely important factor of our production and editing stage. This is because we are going to be unable use voices due to the lack of sound equipment and all the sounds we will have to use will be editing in. As I blogged about before, thriller films use suspense and tension as their main elements so I took some time to think of a few sounds which may be beneficial to our project.

  • Creaking Floors
  • Human Footsteps
  • Human Screams
  • Wind Sounds
  • Heartbeats
  • Dripping Water
  • The Sound of an Item Being dropped
Personally I think these sounds would be quite useful when creating a thriller because each of them can be used to create tension or suspense. For example in films when a person is walking in a dark room with creaking floors, the audience already begin to feel as if something relatively bad is going to happen to the character.
