Intertextuality
Intertexuality is when a movie uses/takes ideas from previous movies and incorpoorates this into there own. A typical example of this is The movie Psycho. Various films have used the famous bath scene from Psycho and have used it in there own.
What lies beneath?
In this film, we see a man carry a dead woman into a bath. the film Psyco uses a Bath as one of its main props.
Fatal Attraction (1987)
2 Women are fighting in the bathroom and a man comes to stop one of them. It ends with one woman being shot and left in the bath with blood all over the bathroom walls. This is similar to Psycho because in psycho the character is stabbed and there is blood all over the walls at the end of the scene.
The Step Father (2009)
We see a man chase a woman into the bathroom. When they get into the bathroom the woman stabs the man and leaves him in the bath. This scene changes the original conventions of the scene from Psycho. In psycho we see that it is a man that stabs the woman. By changing the gender of he roles it disagrees with dominant ideologies.
Succubus (Student Film Opening)
We see a girl lurking around in a hallway and then a cut to a man young man showering. The girl then enters the Bathroom and begins to stab the man. This, out of all the other clips, resembles Psycho the most. It emmulates the moment when the woman is being stabbed. Furthermore, this scene is the only one which contains a stabbing scene that took place in a shower, like Psycho.
